Hawaii,
USA
Hawaii
is the 50th state of the United States of America, situated nearly at
the center of the Pacific Ocean.

Hawaii
is an archipelago of over nineteen distinct volcanic islands located
over a geological "hot spot" in the Pacific. There are eight
major islands, six of which are open to tourism.
Some
general, interesting, information about Hawaii
As
man began to inhabit the islands, they brought with them the flora and
fauna from their native lands. Many of these species were well adapted
to their new location and began to push out the indigent species. This
process was accelerated by the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778 and those
that followed.
Hawaii
has a very interesting history with close ties to England in the 1820.
The US did not want much to do with Hawaii and setting up trades was
very difficult. Well all else failed, the US saw the strategic location
of the islands to expand their control of the South Pacific and manipulated
Hawaii into American 50th State in 1959
King Kalakaua
King
David Kalakaua (1874-1891) was Hawaiis last king. He was a great
Hawaiian revivalist. He brought back the hula, turning around decades
of missionary repression against the heathen dance, and
composed the national anthem Hawaii Ponoi, which is now the state song.
He also tried to ensure some self-rule for native Hawaiians, now a minority
in their own land.
The
king became a world traveler, visiting India, Egypt, Europe, and South-East
Asia. Through his travels, he became aware that Hawaiis days of
independence were numbered. He made what became futile attempts to strengthen
his control and even proposed a royal marriage between his niece Princess
Kaiulani and a Japanese prince but the Japanese declined.
Kalakaua
built lolani Palace for the extravagant sum of $360,000.
As he incurred big debts he became increasingly less popular with the
sugar barons. They formed the Hawaiian League in 1887, developed their
own armies, and forced him to accept a new constitution which strictly
limited his powers, as well as the right to vote for the majority of
Hawaiians. Kalakaua died in San Francisco in 1891.
Hawaiis
native population was decimated by the introduction of diseases from
foreigners. 350,000 laborers came to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations.
Some of these immigrants worked off their contracts and left, but many
stayed and moved off the plantations to farms and businesses of their
own. They came to outnumber Hawaiians and created the unique blend of
cultures which is found in Hawaii today.
After
Hawaiis annexation to the United States in 1898, Chinese immigration
was restricted and plantation owners turned to Puerto Rico, Korea, and
the Philippines. Mixed with Pacific islanders and Europeans, the population
and culture diversity of Hawaii was set. Each group brought its own
culture and language, and out of necessity a unique pidgin English developed
so the varied people could communicate.
Today
Hawaii has many endangered species and there is a continuing effort
to save them. Governmental agricultural inspections at points of entry
aggressively work at keeping out unwanted species. Perhaps the best
example is the fact that Hawaii has no indigent snakes and the few that
can be found are under continuous eradication programs.
Hawaii
has few native mammals, being the main attraction in the sea the humpback
whales, passing through during the winter on their yearly migration
route to their birthing grounds.
This
Tour is called the Island Spirit tour not for nothing
.a short
introduction of each Island is below followed with the itinerary or
the Island Spirit Yoga Tour.

Oahu,
nicknamed
"the Gathering Place," is the most populous and developed
island. All international flight arrive here gathering together
to spread out soon afterwards to visit the other islands. You land in
the southern part of the island where the city of Honolulu and Pearl
Harbor are. Four out of every five Hawaii residents call it home. It
is the governmental and commercial center of the state, and Waikiki
Beach is arguably the best known tourist destination in Hawaii.
Outside
the city are pineapple and sugar cane fields where the North Shore of
Oahu is known each winter as the home of some of the largest waves in
the world.
Oahu
has wild pigs and goats in its mountain valleys. Brush-tailed rock-wallabies,
accidentally released in 1916, reside in the Kalihi Valley. Although
rarely seen, the wallabies are of interest to zoologists because they
may be an extinct subspecies in their native Australia.

Maui
is the second largest island in the chain and is home to 10,023 foot
tall volcanic mountain crater, Haleakala. It is nicknamed "the
Valley Isle" for the narrow plain between Haleakala and the West
Maui mountains. Maui is also known as the best island for viewing humpback
whales on their yearly migration route to their birthing grounds most
often seen between December and March.
On
the west side of the island are the resort areas of Lahaina, Kaanapali,
Kihei, and Wailea. On the east side is hippy town Paia and way to the
east is the tiny village of Hana with the amazing falls, reached by
one of the most winding and beautiful roads in the world. Its
on Maui that you are most likely to see the endangered Nene goose and
the rare Silversword plant, where thin leaves are so soft to touch to
be compared to the feel of a Kashmir shawl!

Molokai,
the "Friendly Isle," is one of the least developed islands
in the chain. It is home to Kalaupapa, the leper colony on Molokai's
north shore that was the home of Father Damien. Molokai is in front
of Maui west coast.
The
two most dominant forest types on Molokai are Kiawe in the dryer areas,
and Ohia lehua in the wetter. Along the banks of streams, once heavily
cultivated with taro, forests of kukui and guava now dominate. Guava
is considered a "pest" in Hawaii as they tend to take over
any area where they are found, choking out other growth.

Kahoolawe,
also
to be seen from the west coast of Maui, its the smallest island
with roads in the Hawaii island group. Kahoolawe was once a former US
Navy bombing range, remains uninhabited. Efforts are being made to rehabilitate
the island, cleanup efforts continue and hopefully in the near future
some replanting of native trees will start.
Lanai,
the second smallest island in front of the west coast of Maui, was at
one time completely owned by Dole Foods and was the largest pineapple
plantation in the world; it is now home to several exclusive resorts.
Lanai has suffered the greatest loss of its native forests, plants,
and birds of any of the main Hawaiian Islands. This has been as a result
of drastic overgrazing and plenty of pineapple plantations in the past.
Lanai
has about 8000 axis deer, descendants from a herd of eight originally
brought to Molokai from India in 1868.

Molokini,
last but not least this half moon shape island is of the West coast
of Maui and one offers some excellent diving adventures. No one lives
on this island, and we hope it stays that way, declaring it a National
Park in the near future
..?

Big
Island Hawaii
The
island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, is the largest island,
and lends its name to the whole island chain. Larger than all the other
islands combined and still expanding in land area thanks to the active
volcanoes on its southeastern coast.
It
is home to the major resort area of Kona, two of the world's largest
mountains, and the world's most active volcano. On the Big Island, wild
horses roam in Waipio Valley, feral cattle graze on the slopes of Mauna
Kea, while wild pigs, goats, and sheep are found in in-land.
Kauai,
the "Garden Isle," is home to several natural wonders, such
as the Wailua River, Waimea Canyon, and the Na Pali Coast. Mount Waialeale
is known as one of the rainiest spots in the world.
Kauai
has the largest number of native bird species in Hawaii. It is the only
major island free of mongoose, which prey upon the eggs of ground-nesting
birds.
Of
Hawaiis two native mammals, the hoary bat lives in Kokee State
Park while the Hawaiian monk seal occasionally hauls out and suns itself
on some of the islands more isolated beaches. Wild pigs, goats,
and black-tailed deer are non-native mammals that are hunted.

Niihau
is a privately owned island with an entirely Native Hawaiian population.
Until very recently, the island was off limits to all but family members
and invited guests of the owners. Tourism to the island is limited to
Helicopter, ATV, and hunting excursions originating on Kauai.
